Happy Flag Day!

Nestled between Memorial Day and Independence Day is Flag Day.

So why celebrate Flag Day?  It isn’t generally a holiday that allows us a day from work.  No one makes a Hallmark run for Flag Day cards.  In fact, I’m not certain that they even exist (Do you hear this, Hallmark?) Also, it is unlikely that anyone plans a vacation specifically around Flag Day. Nonetheless, it’s an important holiday.  It’s a day that Americans can celebrate and honor our flag, the ultimate symbol of patriotism and unity of our nation.  It’s a banner in war, heralded during peacetime and a symbol of American pride.

Some facts that you may or may not know about the American flag include:

  • There are thirteen stripes to represent the original 13 colonies and 50 stars to represent each state in the union.

  • Old Glory is another name for the flag.

  • The original Old Glory resides at the Smithsonian.

  • There are six American flags stationed on the moon.

  • The current flag, which now includes fifty stars, was designed by Robert Heft who was a high school student at the time.

General Flag Rules:

  • Flags must not touch the ground

  • If harm should come to the flag, it must be disposed of properly in a dignified manner.  Check out your local Boy Scout Council as they host flag retirement ceremonies.

  • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, except when a naval ship is signaling to a foreign country’s ship.

  • If the flag is displayed at night, it should be illuminated.

  • When folded properly, the US flag is shaped like a triangle with only the stars showing.  If precisely folded, it will take 13 folds; the same number as the original colonies.

In addition to June 14th being Flag Day,
the United States Army
celebrates its 237th Army Birthday!
