Spacesaver wants you to be completely informed when deciding which high-density (HD) shelving vendor will bring you the most value! While you're most likely aware that a vendor's products can range in aspects of functionality and price, there are a number of related support services, which can differ among vendors. So, what do these support services mean to you and your clients? Keep reading to find out!

1. The Client Needs Assessment
The client needs assessment is arguably the most important service offered by a HD shelving vendor. Like a ripple effect, if the client needs assessment isn't executed properly, the rest of the project is at risk. Understanding the needs of the client is paramount at this stage. Prior to the most appropriate storage solution being recommended, vital pieces of information need to be exchanged. Your HD shelving vendor will work behind the scenes through you, or directly with the client, depending on your comfort level.
2. Recommendation & Design of the Optimal Storage Solution
As an expert in high-density shelving, it is the responsibility of your vendor to recommend a number of storage solutions that will meet the design requirements and budget of any project type and size. Some of the most important pieces of information gained at this stage are: 2D & 3D Cad-compatible drawings, detailed weight (floor load) reports, and accurate budget estimates. For some vendors, these services are complementary, so it's always a good idea to ask.
3. Floor Load Information & Assistance
Whether you're renovating an existing space, or designing for new construction, the floor loading requirements will vary depending on the type of HD solution(s). Your vendor should provide you with project-specific floor loading information, and if necessary, will work with a structural engineer to ensure that the project is completed on time and on budget!
4. Factory Certified Installation & Service
A high density shelving system isn't complete until it's installed to the manufacturer's specifications. That's why it's so important to ask your vendor about their installation and after-sale support services. Is the vendor's installation team factory certified? Is installation an outsourced or in-house service? Do they provide an on-going warranty and/or safety service program so that your client's system continues running smoothly? And of course, ALWAYS ask for references from similar installations!
High-Density shelving doesn't have to be complicated. From pre-planning, sales, installation and service, you can rely on a Spacesaver Design Consultant to provide you with accurate product information and design assistance at every step along the way!

Think every high-density shelving project requires reinforcing the floor?
If you answered YES, this is a must read…
Reinforcing the Floor
Myth 1: All high-density mobile shelving projects in existing buildings require reinforcing the floor.
Fact: Considering that 80% of high-density systems are installed on upper level floors of existing buildings, 90% of them do not require any reinforcing of the floor! Reinforcing the floor is a last resort when all alternate solutions are exhausted.
Lesson Learned: Reinforcing the floor is not required in most applications of high-density mobile shelving.

The Structural Engineer
Myth 2: All Structural Engineers are created equal.
Fact: Some large engineering firms are very familiar with the product and they will do a great job of getting projects approved. On the other hand, some are very unfamiliar with the product, and this is when communication between your storage consultant and structural engineer is critical!
Lesson Learned: Not all structural engineers are familiar with high-density mobile shelving. If they've never worked with the product, they are sure to err on the side of caution. Your storage consultant can educate and provide information that might otherwise be overlooked.

Getting Projects Approved
Myth 3: There are no alternatives to reinforcing the floor.
Fact: Your high-density shelving vendor should be able to provide several alternate solutions that will help to get projects approved. Most structural engineers are not aware of alternative solutions and will therefore resort to reinforcing the floor - a lengthy and expensive process!
Lesson Learned: Get the conversations started between your structural engineer and storage consultant early! In the end, it can save your client weeks of time and thousands of dollars!

Spacesaver is asking students and visitors of elementary, middle, and high school libraries as well as public libraries in the state of Louisiana to participate in the “I Heart My Library Contest.”

The contest encourages students and visitors (under the age of 18) of libraries in Louisiana to draw an image of what they love about their library, along with a brief 100 -word summary describing what they drew. Spacesaver is requesting the drawings to be submitted on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper with our name, “Spacesaver,” reflected predominantly in the image.
The winning library in Louisiana will receive the shelving products Spacesaver is displaying at the ALA 2011 Conference and Exhibit in New Orleans on June 23-28, 2011. Associated Office Systems (AOS) Inc. in New Orleans will be installing the product for the winner after the show.
“Spacesaver and AOS are excited to engage with the library community in Louisiana and give back to a region of our country that is still in great need of support,” said Milissa Rick, Director of Marketing.
Librarians and teachers are asked to promote the contest among their students and visitors. The winning library will be chosen based on the library with the most submissions received by Spacesaver’s corporate headquarters in Fort Atkinson at the end of the day on June 9th, 2011.

BOOTH 1612.....It's Where You Win!
What do you do when your workers are wasting precious time hiking across the building to retrieve poorly located raw materials or essential supplies -precious time that should be spent manufacturing your products? What do you when you know this inefficieny is all it takes to leave the door wide open for competion to take your business? What do you do...you come up with a plan to solve it as quickly and cost effectively as possible, right? So a major rework or expansion of your facility doesn't seem like a real good route and it's not likely your CFO is real loose with the purse strings lately anyway...besides, you need to move quickly!
This is the predicament Proteus Packaging out of Franklin, Wis. was facing. They needed to come up with a better storage solution for it's existing 246,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing facility. And they had to do it quickly if they wanted to stay competitive in the paperboard package manufacturing industry.
Proteus Packaging teamed up with Tim Weidenfeller of Storage Systems Midwest, Waukesha, Wis. to help resolve their storage efficiency challenge. The Solution: ActivRAC™ mobilized storage system by Spacesaver® Industrial.
Not familiar with mobilized storage? Watch this video to see what it's all about!
The ActivRAC system Tim designed with Proteus Packaging utilizes their existing shelving, which is mounted on top of mobilized carriages that move side-to-side on a rail system to eliminate dedicated aisle space between shelving. This gave Proteus Packaging the extra space needed to put its incredibly limited, yet mission-critical, flexo plate storage space to work. The ActivRAC system positions the plates close to the presses – exactly where they’re needed. Operators easily and quickly open aisles to gain 100 percent access to plates at all times, speeding the process of plate change-outs. Today it only takes a few minutes to find plates, which translates into more press uptime and increased revenue.
Tim Wayman, Proteus Packaging Executive Vice President/COO stated, “With the ActivRAC system, it only takes a couple of minutes to access plates. By not having to travel farther for those materials during plate change-outs, we avoid nearly a half-hour of press downtime per day. Given that we only make money when the presses are running, putting storage to work is something that matters to us.”
