Next Top Chef Challenge: Hip, Space Efficient Cookbook Storage

You’ve probably caught at least a glimpse of the “reality” competition television shows where chefs compete against each other in a series of unique culinary challenges.  Contestants are judged by a panel of professionals, with one or more contenders eliminated in each episode.  The chef who wins the final challenge of the season finale is declared the winner!

When watching an episode it’s intriguing to observe these chefs, with time, ingredient and theme constraints, quickly determine their menu, prepare it, and serve it complete.  They seem so gifted.  It’s as though they are spontaneously inventing recipes – as if the preparation of these tasty and eye catching dishes is truly intuitive.

In reality, although there is tremendous natural talent and drive within these chefs, without a doubt, a lot of studying, schooling and experimentation have enabled them to hone these talents into a razor-sharp instinct.  In fact, like all good students of a particular practice, these chefs likely collect and study many, many different recipes and cooking techniques.  So many in fact, that they have probably accumulated a significant cooking library of their own.

Take for example, the request of one chef in building his new kitchen.  Requests to his cabinetmaker included storing ALL of his many cookbooks in his home kitchen, near his work area, in a minimal amount of space, with a modern, hip design.  This chef’s custom cabinetmaker enlisted the assistance of a Spacesaver storage specialist who helped select a standard Spacesaver high density storage product, and worked hand-in-hand with the cabinetmaker throughout the design process.

With a nearby Spacesaver showroom at the local area contractor, the cabinetmaker was able to see the mobile shelving product in person to gain a better understanding of its design and how he could cohesively and elegantly incorporate it into the kitchen’s plan.  Installation is underway...

The resulting beautiful, contemporary kitchen is shown below.  The “hidden” curvilinear cookbook library is at the far left edge of the kitchen, near the stairway.  Behind each curved panel is a pull-out shelving unit for cookbook storage.  This high density storage system maintains the clean, modern lines of the kitchen, and keeps the books close to the point of use, while simultaneously saving space and hiding the potential clutter, which may be created if shelves of books were lining the walls of the kitchen.

You’re not going crazy: Library book stacks ARE cool.

seattle public libraryNo one in their right mind thinks library bookshelves are cool. I mean never. Right? Well, if you see the Seattle central library you’re apt to change your mind, and in the most severe cases, feel the urge to schedule an appointment with a shrink.

But before you fall into the insane concept that a bookshelf is cool, let’s put things in perspective. This particular library is one of the coolest buildings on the freaking planet. Here’s the link if you’ve never seen it.

And whether you bother to click on the longest link known to man or not, let’s just agree that boring wasn’t written into the architectural specifications when it came to bookshelves at this phenomenal work of art. Instead, they had to play off of the use of light since it’s a critical design element of the award-winning building design.

To do that, the static shelving systems throughout the library are decked out with translucent acrylic materials to make the most of natural light that shines through the building’s glass envelope. The acrylic end panels and canopy tops create an especially stunning effect when natural light is combined with custom overhead lighting on each shelving unit. The cutting-edge, upbeat look and feel is also captured from all angles, including upper levels of the facility.

Just be sure you’ve got quick access to your psychotherapist ’cause these bookshelves are crazy, man, crazy.

Compact Mobile Storage - A Pretty Cool Concept

Spacesaver compact mobile shelving system - Toronto Maple LeafsWhen I started as a Spacesaver teammate over six years ago I was, believe it or not, completely unfamiliar with the compact mobile storage concept.  Looking back now I'm sure that I must have crossed paths with a system or two over the years since the products are installed in so many different applications and Spacesaver has been installing systems since the early 1970s.

Although I have since been enlightened, I'm sure there are still lots of other people in the world today that are just as unfamiliar with the concept as I was back then.  It's OK...you can admit it.  Well, it is with those people in mind that I write this post.

At the highest conceptual level compact mobile storage systems exist for single purpose...to save space.  Let's take a look at how...

Spacesaver compact mobile storage system concept

Conventional stationary lateral filing cabinets, shelving and storage cabinets require fixed aisles (usually at least 36" wide) that waste space.

Spacesaver compact mobile storage systems (otherwise known as high-density mobile storage systems) eliminate all but one "moveable" aisle by mounting the storage units to sturdy carriages that roll back and forth on steel rails in the floor.  In most cases this can save 50% of the floor space for more productive uses.

Or the same concept can be used to double the storage capacity in the same floor space.

This concept can be used to save space while storing literally anything.  Seriously...ANYTHING!  Museum artifacts, surgical supplies, evidence, archival documents, books, movie film, retail items, sports equipment, military weapons, production materials...you get the idea.  ANYTHING!

Here are just some of the great benefits achieved by the use of compact mobile storage:

  • Store ANYTHING in fewer square feet of floor space
  • Help reduce your building lease or construction costs
  • Contribute to sustainable green building design and LEED points
  • Make room for additional people and equipment
  • Delay the need for facilities expansion
  • Improve access to materials by storing at point-of-use
  • Enhance productivity and workflow
  • Adapt readily as your storage needs change

Pretty cool concept don't you think?  I do too.  In fact I feel sort of bad for those people that don't know about it yet.  Do you know of someone who needs to be enlightened?  Do me a favor and pass this post on to them.

Fire-Protection Test Spurs Flood of Questions

When a long-held assumption is officially confirmed as fact,NFPA questions are inevitable. Such is the case with fire protection for high-bay shelving systems. After a recent full-scale test showed that Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler systems were the best fire protection for high-bay shelving systems—and test results became code in the NFPA 13-2010 edition—people began asking:

  • Can the system be used with combustible, open-top cartons or containers?
  • Is the ESFR ceiling-mounted only?
  • What is the effect on water demand, piping and pumps?

With these being some of the more frequent questions we get, I thought it would be helpful to answer them here. There’s also a white paper about the full-scale test available for you to download, see below.

On to the first question: Can the system be used with combustible, open-top cartons or containers? Yes, the ESFR system can be used with combustible, open-top, corrugated cartons or containers when used with the Spacesaver high-bay storage system construction.  The NFPA 13-2010 edition added a new section based on the Spacesaver high-bay storage system and full-scale Southwest Research Institute fire testing that clearly permits storage in open top containers.  NFPA 13-2010 includes the ESFR sprinkler and shelving system design criteria for these applications.

As for the ESFR sprinkler, yes, it’s ceiling-mounted only.  And, yes, ceiling-mounted only fire suppression systems are now an approved design for Mobile High-Bay installations under the new NFPA13- 2010 edition.  This is a result of Spacesaver Corporation’s official test “specific” to offsite high-bay storage of books or records boxes.  Prior to this, no such testing was officially conducted and/or presented to NFPA for adoption –and that is why most high-density storage systems constructed prior to NFPA13-2010 have two levels of conventional in-rack sprinklers in the longitudinal flue spaces, and on the “faces” or aisle sides of the shelving units.  Today, however, ESFR systems are already in use in at least six high-density facilities, and many more are being planned.

Lastly, it sounds like there are some concerns over the volume of water that comes out an ESFR sprinkler head. The question we’re asked: What is the effect on water demand, piping and pumps?  I’d answer by saying that the water supply issues are site specific and may not always require greater project costs, given all of the costs involved in these types of projects. It’s also worth noting that not all sprinklers go off during an occurrence.

The new alternative protection, as recognized in NFPA 13 -2010, allows you to avoid the limitations imposed by using intermediate level sprinklers with the ceiling sprinklers. Since the new protection alternative is recognized in NFPA 13, insurance companies applying this standard would likely accept this protection method. The ESFR sprinkler protection and shelving system criteria in this section of NFPA 13 also meet the very rigorous records protection criteria of the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that are more demanding than the damage limitations objectives in NFPA 13.

I encourage you to read the white paper. If it leaves you with any burning questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

BIM Boosts the Bottom Line with Bankable Benefits!

The business value of Building Information Modeling (BIM) was recently placed under the microscope by McGraw-Hill Construction, with their findings detailed in a 52 page SmartMarket Report published in 2009.  You can get the full report in the BIM Special Section of their website, or you can continue reading below as I try to summarize some of the highlights:SmartMarket

Three BIM tidbits immediately jump out of their report:

  • Almost 50% of the industry is now using BIM
  • All BIM users plan significant increases in their use
  • Majority are experiencing business benefits directly attributable to BIM

This should catch the attention of those that may be skeptical about the BIM paradigm shift, and/or answers to those asking the questions about who is using BIM and whether or not they are receiving any real business value from their investments.  This information does not show that trend is simply upward; it shows that the trend is on a rocket ship!  The full use and acceptance of BIM is on track to become an industry standard in HALF the time it took AutoCAD.

Additional findings point to the facts that companies are reaping higher ROI on their BIM investments, even during the lean economic times:

  • Two-thirds of BIM users see positive ROI on their investment
  • 93% of BIM users believe there is potential to gain more value in the future.

BIM is also being seen as a way to get a leg up on the competition:

  • Half of the users are offering new BIM services to their clients
  • Two-thirds say BIM is providing the ability to maintain repeat business

Revit

The caveat of BIM comes in the form of productivity improvements gained through the efficiencies it provides; primarily from clash detection, resulting in a reduction of errors and change orders.

The themes of productivity and profitability are taking shape in the BIM business case.

Spacesaver has embraced the BIM movement, and has created Revit models for the BIM process.

I Had No Idea You Can Do That With Mobile Shelving...WOW!

Mention High Density Mobile Storage and the first thing that pops into our client’s minds is “That is a lot of weight, what about my floors?  Can it work for me?”  The answer is an overwhelming “Yes, we can!” and at a recent installation we encountered this supremely challenging situation:

  • The building was a wood-framed two-story structure with critical areas of the structure using structural steel, but not all areas.
  • The building was brand new and was built to current building code standards.
  • The first floor held a retail showroom and the second floor housed administrative staff and storage.  Our system was headed for the second floor. The client needed High Density Mobile Storage to support both the administrative and sales function of the business.
  • Space was critical on the second floor and every bit of square footage on the ground floor was needed to produce revenue.  On the second floor load, the area in question was engineered for 250 psf but the floor structure was L/240.  In layman’s terms, the floor could hold the weight, but under that load the floor would deflect to a point where it would no longer remain flat enough to prevent the carriages from “drifting”.  Typically HDMS requires a minimum floor structure of L/360, and floors with this rating require your thinking caps to get right the first time.  For full-throttle approval by your favorite structural engineer, Spacesaver High Density Mobile Storage powered systems are listed with L/480 as a minimum deflection criteria; Mechanical Assist Systems the deflection rating is L/700.
  • The floor joists were perpendicular to the desired direction to co-exist with maximum capacity. The floor deck was just plywood nailed to floor joists.

Obviously, our situation of L/240 was difficult, but we crafted a very clever and strong solution. In fact, we created an L/700 floor right on top of the L/240.

Here’s a few photos that are worth a thousand words:

High Density Mobile Storage System

Here is the finished  system.

High Density Mobile Storage System

Underneath each of the four rails are twin steel tubes, each individual tube is HSS 6” ht X 3” w X 1/4” thick walls.

High Density Mobile Storage System

The steel tubes are lag bolted to the wooden joists directly attached to the building’s W14X43 steel support beams. During an earthquake this bad boy is going nowhere.

High Density Mobile Storage System

The height of the steel tubes require that a subfloor be constructed between the rails.   The decking is 31/32” fire retardant plywood which is mandated by Los Angeles County fire codes. The small 2” X 3” metal plates on top of the wood infrastructure are designed to accept the levelers used to make the decking perfectly flat and flush with the top of the rail...makes for the best finished floor possible.

How much did all this cost?  Raw steel and lumber costs were less than three thousand, and when both material and additional labor added combined the price went up about 15% when compared to a standard installation.

A full set of structural engineering calculations added a modest fee as well.  The storage specialists at McMurray Stern get the majority of their projects “calc’d” so those third-party independent reviews aren't considered much of a burden. We encourage all projects to be reviewed by a properly licensed and accredited professional.

ESPN Shows Off Spacesaver Storage System in NFL Athletic Facility

Pete Carroll continues to drive home the “get with his program” message to the players at training camp. Meanwhile, Chris Mortenson, Senior Analyst from ESPN, and Seahawks’ Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck take a stroll through what has to be one of the nicest practice facilities in the league.

If you can't see the video, click here.

Part of that facility’s aesthetic and organizational qualities can be directly attributed to the Spacesaver experts who helped the team handle the extensive amount of equipment they needed to store and have great accessibility to. As Mort tries to convince Matt he’s deserving of a team hat as part of his “On The Road To Camp” feature on ESPN, we realize this isn’t the first time we’ve talked about this particular storage system; the media’s shown it several times… so it begs the question, why are we seeing so much of this?

Aaron Curry in a Spacesaver SystemPete Carrol examines the Spacesaver Storage System

As you’ve seen on this very blog site of late, we’re excited about the new opportunities in the athletic storage arena, partly because we’re dominating the field, and also because we’re a perfect pick for the challenges sports facility planners and designers face. Simply put, all facets of the design community are starting to realize the benefits of lowering their footprint and designing for accessibility, and the sports industry has been searching for these kinds of storage solutions for quite a while.

So we hope Pete gets his message across in Seattle, and our message reaches the other athletic facility managers out there looking for the absolute best storage system they can implement. In fact, if you are one or know one, go ahead and share this blog or the many others here – I’d love to write some more, and ESPN apparently would too.

A Personal Storage Locker That Feels Like a Home Away From Home

Hail to the Spartans - McFarland High SchoolThe last time most of us had an intimate relationship with a steel locker was probably in high school.  Back then your locker was like your second home.  If you were like me and others at my high school (Hail to the Spartans of McFarland High) you probably customized the interior of your locker with pictures from magazines and other personal items that made it a little more comforting place to hang out between classes.

By the way...am I the only one that still has nightmares about forgetting my high school locker combination?  Tell me I'm not...please.

OK...some of us might still have the occasional affair with a gym locker.  Good for you, but unless you are a total die-hard gym rat you probably don't really feel any connection to your locker.  Right?

Our brethren in the Public Safety professions, however, depend upon their lockers almost as much as they depend upon their squad car, their side arm or their flashlight.  OK...maybe that's a little over stated.  I guess their locker won't save their lives but it can save their stuff.  And just maybe the right locker could make their tough jobs a little bit easier.

Spacesaver FreeStyle Personal Storage Locker, Police LockerWhen they are at work they depend upon their locker to protect their personal belongings and when off the clock they depend upon their locker to securely store their gear.  A collection of gear that, through advancements in technology, is constantly growing and evolving.

Storing today's gear in a locker designed to store yesterday's gear isn't going to work.  Things are just evolving too quickly.  Shelves and storage cubbies welded in place can't be moved or modified to accomodate gear of different sizes and shapes.  Today's locker needs to evolve at the same pace as the changes in the collection of gear.

Spacesaver FreeStyle Personal Storage Locker, Police LockerIt was with this goal in mind that we developed the Spacesaver FreeStyle Personal Storage Locker.  Unlike other personal storage systems that offer a limited range of options, FreeStyle is an all-new design with an all-new philosophy: Let the locker conform to the demands of the user.  And..make it easy!  Like this...

Storage Solutions Made Easy - Team with the Best!

The United States Armed Forces is clearly the “LeBron James” of worldwide military forces. LeBron made an interesting and debatable decision recently. He chose to give up a considerable amount of money to team up with two of the strongest, most talented players in the NBA.

When you boil it down, LeBron made a business decision; a carefully calculated business decision. Military personnel make similar business decisions (as well a highly strategic, tactical and operational) decisions all the time. Wouldn’t you feel better about making a business decision that offered you two All-Star teammates, as well?

When you select a partner to supply storage solutions for your military operations, be sure to evaluate the entire team you are selecting to be a part of. Sure, everyone calls themselves the “leaders” and will claim to be “All-Stars”, but when it comes time to perform will they be the “teammates” they claimed they would be?

The question that looms the airways for sports radio talk shows is still, “Did LeBron do the right thing?”

If you can't see the video, click here.

Simple - Yes and No. (OK, not so simple but let me explain).

LeBron did the right thing by surrounding himself with the best talent. LeBron, Wade and Bosh could go down as the most powerful sports trio of all time. They could be mentioned in the same conversations as Troy Aikman, Michael Ervin and Emmit Smith; or Lou Gehrig, Earle Combes, & Babe Ruth; and even James Worthy, Magic Johnson, & Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It’s not hard to believe how teaming with the best can lead teams and organizations to elite levels.

So, what’s the perfect trio in storage?

First, it starts with you – the customer and end-user. Your input to the team is critical in the outcome of the project. You know your operations and processes better than anyone. You are not just buying a shelf, cabinet or weapon rack; you are determining how efficiently you want your business to run.

Next is your local Spacesaver dealer – true storage experts. Not sure who that is? Simply click this link to find out. They would love to join your team. And once they join, they aren’t going anywhere. No trades or free agency here. From the initial space consultation (free of charge) to installation and beyond they will be right behind you every step of the way to ensure you are completely satisfied with your Spacesaver storage systems.

And lastly is Spacesaver – the manufacturer. We listen to your needs and storage issues and translate that into innovative storage solutions that the three of us can apply to your business and win the war on storage and give you the space you need to accomplish your objectives.

So where did King James go wrong? Because he turned this decision into the overblown media frenzy with a 1-hour, prime-time television special on ESPN, he spoiled many of the relationships he had in Cleveland and perhaps farther. Relationships aren’t just important for a team, or a season, or a project; they are important aspects of life.

Spacesaver would not be company we are today if we did not create and retain the great relationships we have with our customers and our local dealer network. We are continually working on making them stronger and stronger. And as we do, our teams (with you) will become stronger and stronger. From our engineers, to our storage consultants all the way up to our executive team, these relationships exist and continue to help us help you.

So when seeking storage solutions that best match the objectives of your mission, be sure to team with the best. The last thing you want is anyone asking if you did the right thing.

High School Athletics Equipment Storage: Solved.

The Chargers Get Organized in San Antonio

chargers stadium facility resized 600

Do you remember the school locker rooms of yesteryear?  I do, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed (and jealous) right now as I walk through the athletics facility at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, TX.

Yes, I said F-A-C-I-L-I-T-Y… These are educators serious about sports, and serious about keeping things organized, all-the-while pumping up the moral of the student body. Like as serious as individual sport “cages” where uniforms and accessories get stored in, you guessed it, Spacesaver Mobile Storage Systems. A storage system specifically designed for this facility and it's use.

IMG 6602

Not just focusing on the football program, the kids in here are getting ready for other sports like Tennis, Baseball, Basketball and Gymnastics – and those programs have their own space to keep their stuff! All the gear - the uniforms, bats, balls, rackets, helmets, pads, supplies, trophies, endorsement deals, pro contracts…. Wait, maybe not those last few – but all the rest for sure.

players team jacket storage  Mobile sports storage and locker room cage  custom graphics on mobile storage shelving

Then of course, there’s the Football team’s equipment storage; custom end-panel graphics, just like in the individual sport cages, along with custom shelving and bins to accommodate EXACTLY what they store; the helmets are dry because they’re on racks to keep them that way, the pads are organized because they’re in suctom cubbies to keep them that way, the cleats and shoes are in bins and boxes – because they stay organized that way – these systems were custom built to accommodate this facility and it’s commitment to athletics.

Uniform storage on Spacesaver Mobile Storage    Jersey storage on the Spacesaver system Pads and other equipment storage

So now you’re thinking, “man, they sure have a lot of storage in this place” – well, sure they do – but it doesn’t take up half as much space as standard sports equipment storage – and that means more space for the important stuff like playing fields, courts, stadiums and most importantly - students.

Charger football equipment mobile storage

I know, I know – “they tend to do things bigger in Texas” and all that – but in this case, “they’re doing it in a smaller footprint and with more organization than ever”.

O.K. so it doesn’t roll off the tongue, but it works for me - and it works for the Churchill High School Chargers.

Calgary Stampeders Smell Sweet Victory in… The Locker Room?!? Eh?

As of 2010, the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League have won the league’s Grey Cup championship six times, including 1948, where their championship win capped a perfect 12-0 season.  As sure as the Stamps face challenges in battling their main rivals, the Edmonton Eskimos, and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders, they also faced tough challenges in their equipment and locker rooms.

These challenges involve space and organization.  As with many teams, space is always a challenge as they struggle to provide adequately sized lockers, and room for the players, while also organizing and managing all the equipment and uniforms needed for the entire team.  In situations like this, Spacesaver’s high density moveable shelving enables equipment managers to store as much equipment in about half the space of static shelving, or twice as much equipment in the same space.

Jerseys in moveable shelving     bins & supplies in moveable shelving

Add the powered option to the moveable shelving, and busy team staff, with hands full of supplies and equipment can – at the touch of a button – start the shelving rolling and enter the aisle without hesitation.  Spacesaver's StorefrontTM option, which provides storage on the ends of the carriages, gives players quick access to high volume, often used items like tape, shoe laces and sweat bands – without even having to move the shelving.

   touchpad w/audit control   StoreFront supplies

Another new addition to the Stamps’ equipment room is a WRX Wheels unit – a compliment to the storage system, it has wheels of its own, and a work surface built-in, enabling staff to easily take their tools and work surface with them as they move from locker to locker, making equipment repairs.

WRX Wheels w/supplies & work surface

George Hopkins, Equipment Manager for the Calgary Stampeder Football Club, offered this insight:

“What I really like about this system is the efficient usage of space.  When space is at a premium, it’s imperative to utilize it properly, and this allows us to do it easily.  Also, being able to design the size of the openings and shelf dimensions is invaluable because you really can customize to what your needs are.  The added bonus is closing them all up at night and the room looks great.“

And, ahhh, this sweet smell of victory in the Stamps’ facility, even made it to the news! Click the play button below.

Not too long ago we surveyed users and purchasers of mobile storage systems to find out what they value most in a compact mobile storage system.  One of the top three responses was "ease of use."

Eclipse Powered System Control - Mobile Shelving

So, we set off to develop the simplest user interface possible for a powered mobile storage system.  We came up with this (see photo to the left) control interface.  It has three simple buttons.  Move Left, Move Right and Stop.  It also has simple, easy to understand light indicators.  A green light indicates that the system is "Ready for Use."  A red light indicates that the user needs to check the open aisle to make sure it is clear before accessing the system.

We believe this is really as intuitive and uncomplicated as it gets.  There are times, however, when a user may want the ability to take more control over their mobile storage solution.  So...the design challenge... How do you maintain the ease of use of this simple control while allowing the user to assume complete control over the many features that the Eclipse Powered System has to offer?

Spacesaver LCD Audit Control TouchpadThe result...the Spacesaver touchpad with display and audit trail.  This new control offers the same intuitive buttons, indicators and appearance as it's more basic cousin, at the same time offering the user complete control over the more advanced operational features of their system.

The backlit LCD display provides the user with status information and guides them step-by-step through the intuitive menu choices in English, Spanish and French languages.

Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the top five responses to our survey of users was "security."  Here's where this touchpad control really shines.

You can configure up to 512 unique user PIN numbers each with individually assigned permissions.  You can control who has access to what materials at what time of day, day of week, etc.

The touchpad even maintains a log of who did what and when.  We call this the "Audit Trail."  You can download the audit trail data to your PC and even import the data into Excel for tracking and reporting.

So...when would you want to choose the touchpad control?  When you need to...

  • Protect sensitive materials from access by unauthorized persons,
  • Achieve personnel accountability via audit trail capabilities, or...
  • Enhance workplace efficiency with easy-to-read display prompts and easy access to numerous Eclipse Powered System features.

The touchpad control is compatibile with all new and existing Spacesaver Eclipse Powered Systems.  Call us today at 1-800-255-8170 or contact us here to find out more about how YOU can take CONTROL over your mobile storage system.
